This is the first time a study has put a limit on the number of coffees we can drink daily without risk to our health and the conclusion is that we should drink less than six.
“Drink six or more coffees a day and your cardiovascular risk will increase by 22 per cent,” says the new study, conducted at the University of South Australia, taking into account data from some 350,000 people aged 37 to 73.
And it doesn’t matter if you have the gene that metabolizes caffeine quickly or not at all (it’s the CYP1A2 gene, and it makes people with the same metabolism metabolize caffeine 4 times faster than the rest), because cardiovascular risk affects everyone. “We have found that, regardless of individual genetic profile, drinking 6 or more cups of coffee a day increases the risk of hypertension, a precursor to cardiovascular disease,” explain the Australian researchers.
Coffee is the most widely consumed stimulant in the world. Lots of people, myself included, are nothing without our morning coffee. We need the caffeine in coffee to wake us up and turn our energy and concentration resources ON. The problems start when we overdo it. And we know full well that excess caffeine makes us irritable and nervous, causes insomnia and even nausea. Why does that happen to us? Well, simply because caffeine makes our bodies work faster and work harder. It’s clear to the experts that these symptoms are telling us that we’ve already had our fill of caffeine.
It is important that we listen to our body, because, from 6 cups of coffee a day, our risk of hypertension clearly increases and, with it, the chances of suffering heart attacks and strokes. Recent statistics say that more than 70 percent of Spaniards over the age of 18 drink coffee every day. Although the average is 2.2 cups a day, that is only an average, because some people drink many more, some people up to 10 or more a day!
“It’s a big mistake, because in nutrition, the key is moderation,” the researchers say. “If you go too far even with what you consider super healthy (and coffee has lots of benefits backed up by studies!) your health will be affected for the worse.
